…a succulent beef joint with dishes of vegetables and crisp roasties. 

“Paul ? … call the kids please!”

The rush of feet, and cheering filled her ears. She carried fragrant gravy in with puffed Yorkshire puddings.

They tucked into this feast; Sunday lunches were often more frugal …

“What’s the occasion?” asked Paul, as he shared out the carved roasted meat, pink through the middle and very tender.

“Oh, an offer at the butchers I couldn’t refuse.”  she said casually, smiling at the family around the table. She didn’t share with them, her private arrangements `under the counter´….
